Sunset, Sunrise

About half-way into our eight-hour flight to Nairobi, we glanced out of the window and witnessed a marvelous sight–  the most beautiful sunset over the winding Nile River.  Deep, vibrant orange fading to pink, then purplish blue.  All at once, despite our sleep-deprived minds, it became real to us– we’re in Africa, our new home for the next three years.  As we awoke this morning, our jet-lagged bodies reminded us once again that we’re no longer in the planning and preparation stage to serve in Kenya. We are here!

susetA wise soul (Giles’ mom) prayed for us that we would experience both growth and wonder during our time here, and I feel like it’s already begun.  Although we are tired and perhaps a bit overwhelmed already with the many things that we must take care of in the next few days/ weeks to set up our home here, we are at peace in the knowledge that we are exactly where we are supposed to be.

A seminal Bible passage for us during this season has been Psalm 139.  “If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me.”  We know that God has gone before us and continues to be with us at every new step (including our travel to get here, which involved several hiccups!).

This blog may be somewhat silent for the next few weeks as we integrate into our new abode.  I can’t wait to post about our observations of life in a new culture.  Everything will be new and different, but I pray that we hold onto the wonder we now feel, knowing that God is present in every moment, every interaction, and even every struggle.
